The majority of the social progress in the United States occured before the Reagan presidency. The gains in socil parity made by minorities meant that only pockets of overt racism still existed and could just as often be exhibited by the minorities as by whites. Women had opened up their frontiers into nearly every area that men used to claim sole dominion to. Besides the election of Obama, what major hurdles have minorities or women had placed in front of them or have lept over? All I see now is bickering, finger pointing, racial pandering, and none of the harmony that the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement desired.
Without someplace else to turn our anger, we make enemies out of the blacks, the whites, the immigrants, the rich, the liberals, the conservatives, and any other group one could conceive holding a beef with. In fact, I would say that we spend more time picking fights over nits then we do getting productive things done. We have nobody else to focus our aggression on but each other. It's basic human nature. If somebody doesn't have an enemy, they go out and make one.
