Would you rather have a male or female psychiatrist, if you had to have one? Why? I can't decide which would suit me better. On the one hand, I love older men, and crave the attention of a masculine figurehead, but they don't necessarily understand women, even though I'm a tomboy... Sexual tension is also an issue. As for women, I don't trust them. A lot of women have turned on me in my life and it's hard for women to get along fully. Women are in constant competition with each other, it seems. But, a female psychiatrist might understand me better, be more sensitive, and also be a good influence in my life--if she's not a kidney thief.

Ugh, but you know, I've had so much trouble getting any psychiatrist. The ones in this city that do therapy and medication management don't take insurance, and the rest just do medication and send you to a counselor also, which means double the money anyway. My current psychiatrist spent five minutes with me last visit >=O   He had changed my medication because it wasn't working, and then that didn't work out, so he changed it back to where I was and then ushered me out of the room >=O  How is that helpful!?

Well, you would want to avoid having any kind of romantic connection to a psychologist or counselor.  One way or another, it would get in the way of your ability to open up.  You must be comfortable telling a therapist things that you would feel uncomfortable talking about with loved ones.  The ideal relationship between therapist and patient strikes a balance between trust and a professional disconnect.  You must trust the therapist enough to be able to tell them that you enjoy making necklaces out of fingernail clippings and have them be able to be far enough away emotionally to give a neutral assessment.

A female therapist might well understand you better, but if you have trust issues with females then they might not be the best choice.  If you were to choose a male therapist, the best course of action would be to tell them about any potential attraction.  They are trained to detect and deal with that.  You would also need to check yourself to ensure that you aren't growing too close.  If you are having trouble with payment issues, I would recommend going with a psychiatrist and trying to see a counselor with Catholic Charities.  They are used to working with variable incomes and many times they will tell you to pay what you can.  In the realms of counseling, they are religious in name only.  They are fully licensed counselors and they gave me a lot of help during one of the many roadblocks in my life.

Heh, one of my past male psychiatrists I felt really comfortable with shocked me one day when we were discussing what kind of guy I liked. I made the mistake of saying I find intelligence attractive. So he says, "Funny how you can't see what's right next to you." Shan: !!! Doc: "Well, time's up." *runs away*

It was a little awkward the next session but it was never mentioned again and we got along fine. But yeah, it must be hard for psychiatrists to not get emotionally involved with their patients.

The thing is, it would be great for me to talk with a woman that I can trust and share my feelings with. I think I'll try for a woman. If she ends up sucking, back to men!

No, I was there, and there was no way he didn't mean it like that. Just the way he looked at me when he said it and the way he acted towards my mom when she was paying for the session. Mom said to me in the car afterward that he was acting really funny and wouldn't even look at her and she asked me why. So I told her what he said.

But, if you don't believe that someone could get a crush on me I understand ;__;
